Unsung Champions – Sylvia Cherotich Cheseny, 29 Yrs. Kapsokwony – Kenya | Ep 31.

In which
area of life have you been most successful and comfortable to share with the
world about?
Community Strategy.

What
inspired you to pursue this journey, and how did you overcome
initial challenges?
I have always been passionate about the
community. I am an Environmental Health degree graduate and after my graduation
I went back home and the kind of jobs I secured were short term and I was not
contented. In Kapsokwony (home), there is a sub county hospital and one day I
decided to try my luck by applying as a volunteer, luckily enough I secured a
position. I’ve been working as a volunteer for 5 years now and I’m proud of the
steps ahead being made. Of course going without a salary is a challenge, but
that does not stop me from being there for my community. Now that I am in
charge of a number of community units, it calls for hard work and devotion, be
it in maternal health, jiggers infestation, sanitation and behaviour change,
I’ll be at the front line to give my all as I believe service to humanity is
service to God.

Please share a significant
moment or decision that played a significant role in your success?
I live in Kapsokwony community and one day in my
usual office days, news was going around that the community health promoters we
to do their household visitations and the fact that they never made a visit at
my home did not sit right with me. I decided to visit the public health office
and inquire on that. It was after that confrontation that visitations started
being carried out in my village. At times I would go round the village just to
confirm whether the services were now home.

How do you navigate work-life
balance and maintain your well-being amidst the success?
At the moment, I’m not a full-time employee,
therefore I don’t have a tight 8am to 5pm schedule. Still, there are hectic
days but with a work plan one is able to balance and prioritize. With a great
team by my side, work runs smoothly as we are aware of what’s expected of us
and it’s our role to be there for the community.

What advice
would you give to aspiring women on a similar journey or who dream of the same
kind of success?
Keep pushing, keep
doing what you do, give your best and one day your efforts will be rewarded.
Also do some networking, make friends and share what you do with others so that
when opportunities arise, you’ll be notified.

In the face of setbacks, how do
you stay resilient and continue to thrive in your journey?
With the passion for the people, you’re able
to keep pushing. In my field, people have different beliefs and it’s always a
hectic task to bring them to light but with the cooperation from my team,
government officials and even individuals from the medical field particularly
nurses, we keep thriving.
